Work Ethic Veterans Challenges

The training, discipline, and work ethic veterans receive from the military help them in the path to a successful college career. Having these characteristics set veterans ahead of their fellow non- veteran students who do not uphold these mannerisms. Yet we often read about veterans barely getting by at college, flushing away their G.I. bill, and failing at life. Although previous military affiliation proves to be beneficial, I have learned first hand of the many challenges veterans face while attending college. While in the military, veterans are accustomed to very detailed and structured days. Having someone telling them step by step how to complete a task, even working as a group to accomplish the work. It’s very seldom they work alone because in the military what affects one affects them all in some way. Veterans also receive up to date training and refresher courses before they are expected to perform a task. Translating these skills to the classroom is deemed as challenging since most professors assign research, writings and other projects failing to …show more content…
When veterans first join the military they test into a certain field of jobs, even if its not highly desired, then have to choose from jobs within that category. In the Navy, a person who tests into engineering would have to choose to be an electrician, plumber, welder, etc. despite their wanting a degree in the medical field one day. The military will send people to apprenticeship training for their job, once complete they will receive on the job training to become more efficient with their work. After serving the obligated amount of time in the military, the veterans years of knowledge in the engineering field does not transfer to a medical degree. Many veterans feel left behind after starting college so many years after their high school peers who have completed college or already working in their desired

Veteran: a person who has served in the military. That’s the definition that Google gives you when you type it in, but to me a veteran is more than that. I come from a military family. Words like loyalty and respect are commonly used in my home especially when it comes to describing my father and my grandfather, both veterans who have given up their time to serve this nation. Due to my father serving overseas, I know how it feels to wake up in the morning, walk down the hall, and expect to see a warm smile welcoming you to the kitchen, but instead find that it is not there.…

This is absurd due to the fact that after the war or wherever they're sent they are supposed to be granted college scholarships, financial aid, and assistance but if this is true why can they find jobs and homes for their family after all they have done for us. Imagine proudly serving for your country, you've fought in the war and you've ranked in the top 10, after 8 years you are granted permission to leave and go home but when you arrive home you've lost your job, home and family. The only thing left are tears of sorrow and regret, how would you feel? Lonely, depressed and left with nothing but the clothes on your back, you would feel used and helpless. Others may only think of this as à way that I am only trying to make you feel that homeless veterans take the highest poll on the homeless population, but that is not the case i’m trying to put à end on all of it whether you served our country or not.…

As long as I can remember I loved animals, and always got excited when I saw them. Since I took the ASL classes in high school I still enjoy it, but not as much as I enjoy helping animals. These two careers have both different and similar requirements for me like education, money, personal effects and Social benefits.…

Because of the physical and emotional trauma that soldiers experience after returning home from deployment, they are unable to perform tasks such as obtaining jobs, as employers often view and determine their injuries as “disabilities”. Nicholas Johnson, a former specialist in the Arkansas Army National Guard, who spent a year in Iraq in 2006, stated “I can’t get a good job now because . . . I have to be upfront and say I have this disability, I have a tore-up back,” he said “So now, the factories here in Topeka, where I live now, they’re like: ‘Oh, wow, he has military experience.…

The reading in “A Peace Reader” that I decided to pick is one that is titled “War is no way to start a career.” This story talks about the struggles that veterans go through after they are finished surviving time in the military. They more specifically tackle it after two wars: The Vietnam War and World War 2. After World War 2, Male-Veterans out-earned none veterans by 10-20 percent, but Soldiers from the Vietnam war were out earned by none veterans by the same amount. According to the article, it says that the main reason for this was that employers didn’t want to hire veterans because of the drugs and defeat they had probably been through while at war.…

Being a leader of any kind, at any level means someone either looks up to you, or they simply look to you for guidance. When you have people under you, or that you are in charge of, you have to be on top of things, know how to handle any situation, and if you do not know how to handle a situation, then know where you can find information on how to handle the situation. Marines past, present, and future all have had to and will have to take responsibilities for their actions. In some way, shape, or form we cannot just try and weasel our way out of a situation.…
