Words of the Wiser are found throughout the book Touching Spirit Bear. Words of the Wiser portrays symbolism, characterization, plot, and theme. I choose these four elements because they all play a role in Words of the Wiser and the book. All of these elements of fiction make this book extremely detailed and descriptive. Without these elements Touching Spirit Bear would not be a solid story with a good plot.
Symbolism is one of the elements of fiction that Words of the Wiser portrays. In more than half of the Words of the Wiser examples, Edwin and Garvey use symbolism to teach Cole a life lesson. For example, in Touching Spirit Bear:

This can tell us a lot about a person's character traits. “ ‘Animals can teach us more about ourselves than any teacher.’ . . . ‘If I saw a Spirit Bear, I’d kill it,’ Cole said” (Mikaelsen 17-18). This shows that Cole didn’t listen to Edwin’s advice about respecting animals. He still wanted to harm the Spirit bear. This quote shows that Cole is rude and violent because he didn't listen to the advice given and he said he wanted to kill it, which tells us that he is violent. That is how we know the personality of Cole through Words of the …show more content…
Words of the Wiser can show plot because it moves the story forward, whether it’s rising action, climax, or falling action. “Then she shrugged. ‘Why live if you can’t help others and make the world a better place?’” (Mikaelsen 106-107). This is moving the story forward because it’s giving Cole an idea for helping others later on in the story and it also teaches Cole why he needs to help others, which impacts the story. This quote is part of the rising action because it’s leading up to the climax of Touching Spirit Bear. That is why the plot is part of the elements of fiction for Words of the

Whether symbolism is trying to show something that is out of context or it represents the true meaning of an object or idea in the story, symbolism provides knowledge on something that could not be clear in the plot and theme of any story. Symbolism helps the readers to understand a deeper meaning to any story. An excellent example of a story that has symbolism is “Hill like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway. What is the meaning of the word “symbolism”? Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. Some stories and poems might have different symbols depending on who the reader is, because everyone sees things differently. In the poem “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight”, there are three good symbols such as the Green Knight that challenges Gawain, the ax that the Green Knight had, and the green sash that the Green Knight’s wife gave to Gawain.…
