Do you have a Facebook? Did you post some opinions on the Facebook?Freedom of speech is a fundamental value in the United States. All Americans believe in that they have right to express their own opinions, but words we express have the power may cause a positive or negative effect that we can’t imagine. According to the article “The Critic in Time of War”, the author Margo Jefferson claims that “We can be acutely responsible for the meanings and powers of language.” It means writers should responsible for using their words with careful consideration. In fact, I can’t agree any more that we need to use words carefully and responsibly because of the imperceptibly, influentially and aggressively.

As professor Carlos Ruiz Zafón said “ Books are mirrors”, books are a microcosm of society , it can resonate and push people rethinking of the problems in society, thus change or shape a society. During severe war times, many authors use words to show their love to their countries and inspired people to keep fighting for free. Ba Jin, considered by many China’s most important and influential writer, use words as his weapons to fight at the time of Anti-Japanese War. He wrote a lot of articles and spread a large number of Anti-fascist literature to record the crimes of the Japanese Army, the tribulations that Chinese suffered and the struggling spirit of the people around the world, which help people to see signs of hope, inspired people to fight. Ba Jin’s literature is a splendid literary legacy of Chinese nation. The power of words not only showed in the age of war, but also in the peace age. Uncle Tom’s Cabin wrote by Harriet Beecher Stowe plays a important role in the movement of abolitionist and the American Civil War. Silent Spring wrote by Rachel Carson called attention to environmental issues and caused DDT to be made illegal that helped thousands of animals. But not every book has good influence on society, The Clansman is a book lead to a disgraceful anti-black film and led to led to support for the Jim Crow laws at last.
