I chose to record a 25-minute whole group, English Language Arts lesson that focused on the 7-Steps Vocabulary strategy and Sentence Frames. This lesson focused on two selected terms (play and dip) from the targeted story “Pig in a Wig.” As I began the lesson, I activated students’ prior knowledge by asking students if they remembered the two words that they learned the previous week. Students were able to recall the terms and their definition and were able to remember the way those words were introduced to them. I began explaining to students that they would be introduced to two new words from a new story we would begin reading the following day.…

Keep in mind, orthographic knowledge promotes fluent reading, writing, and vocabulary knowledge, all of which are critical for academic success. Therefore, when creating a word study schedule, it is important to identify the time of the day that will allow students enough time to complete activities and expand their knowledge. As educators are creating and implementing the schedule, I believe that allowing for student participation and by explaining the schedule to students or what is expected of them, will create a classroom environment that holds educators and students responsible for what has been taught, rather than just the educator. Educators must also take into consideration the classroom environment, individual or group work, stations or seat work, and the amount of time that will be provided for students to complete word sorts. It should also be noted that some students may not be familiar with word sorts, and may need additional clarifications.…

During my observation of an ESL push-in classroom, I have come across with many pedagogical issues and concerns that were brought in the Methods of Teaching class. Such topics include the use of cooperative Learning, classroom setting, adapting lesson plan and differentiated instructions by incorporating visuals, hands-on activities, simulations of real life situations etc so that students can nurture their skills academically, linguistically, socially as well as emotionally. The purpose of this report is to focus solely on the two major components of teaching-learning environment, and the components are relatively described as the classroom environment and the participation of students in relation with what I have learned in this class. When I entered the classroom, the first thing fascinated me was that all the four word walls were well labeled in both the languages(English and Spanish) with appropriate pictures. The setting of the room was safely configured, and convenient as well as appealing to the kids.…

In learning of vocabulary in this course I managed to learn of how using a short range of words through the assignment may be a bad thing in making someone fill constrained within the repetitiveness. From this course it has also become clear to me just how far apart reading and writing really are, “Readers must focus their attention and bring certain interests and capacities to their reading experiences, whereas writers have to diffuse their attention to consider all the possible items that could go into the text being written”(14). The way that readers and writers have to process the words reaching their heads is amazing, but conflicting since most writers like reading and vice…

Vocabulary acquisition is one of the largest elements in reading success. There are two types of vocabulary a student must acquire in order to become a successful reader: content and high frequency. Content vocabulary refers to words that have a specific meaning. These words can act as nouns, verbs, adjectives, or adverbs. High frequency words do not carry a specific meaning but occur the most in the English language (Houghton Mifflin Publishing Company, 2013).…
