Jospeh Campbell, an American mythologist, has popularized the idea of the hero’s journey. The hero’s journey is something that every hero is required to go through. According to Campbell, “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Campbell 1). A hero must also accomplish one of two deeds. The first deed is the physical deed, where “…the hero performs a courageous act in battle and saves a life” (Campbell 1).…

To begin, a definition of a hero's journey is the common template of a broad category of tales that involve a hero who goes on an adventure, and in a decisive crisis wins a victory, and then comes home changed or transformed. The Great Gatsby is about a young man who fell in love with a girl named Daisy, but he was sent off into war so was lost from his long love and then years later he reunites with her and tries to get her love back when she's married to another man. The Matrix is about a man named Neo and was messaged by the Matrix that he will be a Matrix, later on he met a friend named Morphias and he was Neo’s father basically but eventually Morphias gets caught by the Matrix. Additionally, I believe in both stories there contains a hero that follows a hero's journey circle and those heroes are Gatsby in “The Great Gatsby” and Neo in “The Matrix”. My reasons behind Gatsby being a hero are: Fills in the Steps, Main Character, Unforgettable, and Rich.…
