It was bright and early no later than 7 o’clock at the naval base. The sun just coming over the horizon, the ocean was like glass. Me and my 21 other band members getting ready in are ironed white uniformed. At 8 o’clock we are all going to play are routine of playing the national anthem on the deck of the Arizona.
Around 7:30, heading down for breakfast Fredrick told us that crew wanted to hear us perform up on the deck of the ship and play are hit Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, ect. It was 7: 45 when we we raised the flag and were preparing for the National Anthem. We all raised for the flags and started to play. Not even a fourth of the way through we hear bullets fly by right then all band members and crew dropped what was in hand and scurried to their battle station. I was behind the rest of all the band members, maybe on the second floor when I heard the noise of the of the missiles fly out of the big guns right a I reach the third floor i hear an explosion an fuming flames coming my way. The heat started to burn the wooden deck above I started to scramble to get to open air. My eyes were burning from smoke. I was less than 5 feet away from the star well when the deck above collapsed right in front of me. I was scrambling around when a Japanese dive bomber hit the side of the ship and made a gaping hole that a jeep could fit through. I was trying to get to the hole when the water started to rush in when the ship started to tilt over. By then half of my clothes have been burnt of. I had a view of all the destruction that has been closed everything was on fire 2,403 men died in action 1,177 were my crew mates and 1,178 men got wounded i had 3rd degree burn all of my body plus i was covered in oil.
