It allows me to explore the different methods of creation. Using only hand tools is one of the hardest methods, but much more fulfilling. The absence of power tools really puts things into perspective. I have a much greater appreciation for how the Amish live after using hand tools. Woodworking also lets me develop cognitive abilities, like multitasking and visualization. I am constantly planning projects getting new ideas, so being able to visualize what I want is very important. While working on a project, I often have to envision what the end product will look like, which determines what step I should take next. And it helps to have a strong focus on where my fingers are at all times. Woodworking runs in my family. My great-grandfather was carpenter. Both of my grandfathers delved into woodworking. My father does woodworking as a hobby. I even know of a Scottish ancestor who was a cabinet maker for Scottish naval ships. We still have one of the tools he used all those years ago. There are not many hobbies that are as historic as woodworking. Being a woodworker gives me a connection to my family. Woodworking, when done safely, is one of the best hobbies to have, in my opinion. The amount of satisfaction I get from crafting works of art, cabinets, or trinkets is tremendous. I believe that a quality, hand-made cabinet or a simple, yet thoughtful paperweight is worth so much more than
