Down through the years since the United States began, each president has faced different challenges, especially pertaining to foreign policy and war. George Washington chose neutrality when England and France were ready to destroy not only each other but the allies as well. Woodrow Wilson, the 28th president, took a page out of George Washington’s book over 100 years later. When Europe was fighting in the First World War, Woodrow Wilson had a difficult decision to make regarding the future of the United States. Though some disagree with his policies, he had successes and failures just like all the other presidents. However, his presidency as a whole can be analyzed based on how he performed during a war. Woodrow Wilson faced a new challenge in office, a world at war and his successes and failures during this hostile time have impacted the United States. First and foremost, it could be argued that the United States entering World War I was a failure on his part. This is because for most of the war the American people had no desire to enter the war, as it was Europe’s problem. On the other hand, one could argue that the United States delaying entering the war was a failure on Wilson’s part. Could the war have had less disastrous effects had the United States entered sooner? We will never know for sure. In addition to his failures with regard to World War I, under his administration prohibition was enacted. Although he vetoed the 18th amendment that would lead to prohibition, the fact of the matter is that during his term it was created which led to 14 years of prohibition.
