President Woodrow Wilson Woodrow Wilson’s educational background in history and political science, experience as a college professor and president of Princeton University, along with his performance as the Governor of New Jersey, led to his election as the twenty-eighth President of the United States, allowing him to implement his strong idealistic views, and transform America’s domestic and foreign policies. Thomas Woodrow Wilson was born on December 28, 1856 in Staunton, Virginia (Nordholt 6). His father was a Presbyterian minister and moved his family to Georgia when Woodrow Wilson was a young boy (7). As governor, Wilson made it clear he was not going to be manipulated by any one, and he would serve the people and the state of New Jersey (Nordholt 83). Wilson shocked the country when he did not support the candidacy of his party boss, revealing it would not be good for the people (84). He became very popular with the people for standing up to the “machinations of politics” (84). Wilson’s reputation as a progressive reformer would thrust him into the presidential election of 1912 (84). Wilson was a man of determined means, who worked tirelessly for peace and the League of Nations (282). He was the first president to travel to Europe when he attended the peace conference (282). When opposition arose about him losing dignity by attending the conference, he sent word he was not concerned about losing dignity as this was what he lived his whole life for (282). Wilson did not want to amend the treaty and when it came time to vote, there was not a majority (402). The Senate rejected the treaty and membership to the League of Nations (402). Wilson was disappointed when the Democrats lost the presidential election in 1920 (412). He realized his dreams were not the dreams of the people any longer (412). However, Wilson received the Nobel Peace Prize for his peacemaking efforts in December of 1920
