He felt that US cannot stand by and face German aggression. U.S. should have the moral obligation to step forward and fight for the principles upon which it had been founded. It was for democracy. It is the first time after George Washington’s advice to stay out of European affairs, that America would get involved in a war over in Europe. It marked the first step Americans took to change the nation from isolationists to imperialists. Americans, unlike the imperialists from the old times where nations extend their authority over foreign countries in the forms of colonies and dependencies; American imperialists is meant to be involved in the world’s affair for the benefits of American ideals. Wilson’s decision for joining the war had set a precedent for the future foreign policies to fight and make decisions that will benefit and support democracy. For example, FDR joined World War II mainly due to that Japan bombed the American military base in Pearl Harbor (an invasion on U.S. territory), which killed hundreds of American soldiers and destroyed many military ships, planes and weapons. However, during World War II, on the European side of the war, America was fighting against fascism in order to protect democracy at home because Hitler had taken over most of Europe and the public fear that he would set his eyes on U.S.
