If you were to hit your head against wood all day, your head would hurt a lot. But for woodpeckers, that might be different story! Woodpeckers are part of the Picidae family and can be found in most countries. “There are 180 different species of woodpeckers”(wikipedia.org). You can find woodpeckers in forests and wooded areas. Most woodpeckers peck on a wooden tree trunk to find insects to eat. Some species peck on trees to communicate with other woodpeckers. “The largest woodpeckers can reach 20 inches in length. While the smallest woodpeckers can be 3 to 4 inches”(softschools.com). They also have centrally located feathers that keep them in an upright position and provide stability. The color of woodpeckers varies, they can be red, white, black, and yellow. “Depending on the species of woodpecker, they can live from 5 to 11 years in the wild”(softschools.com).
