Wooden Compost Bins

Improved Essays
At our last class session, we decided to meet as a group on thursday to discuss our plans for the wooden compost bins, and to get information for how we take action on how we can make it possible for us to go through with our plans. I met Vanessa and Alyssa outside of Dudley Moorhead Hall, two hours before our class starts, and we began to find a place to sit down and talk about what we need to do. Finally, we went up to the second floor of Dudley Moorhead Hall, where the sociology office was located, and we asked the front desk about who can we talk to for going forward with our idea of the wooden compost bin. The front desk gave us a map, and pointed at the a building that we needed go to, if we wanted to talk to someone that can help us. …show more content…
The building was Corporation Yard A, which was across the street from the Student Services Center, near Tenth street and San Fernando street. It took us about five minutes to walk from Dudley Moorhead Hall to Corporation Yard A. As we enter the building, there was no one at the desk, so I rang the bell, and lady came up to talk to us. Vanessa explained to her that we are students, who are doing a project on social change, and our idea was to put out at least one wooden compost bin out on campus. The lady gave Alyssa a card with a phone number and an email, and she told us that it will be better to email this person a request, if we wanted to go through with our project. I suggested that we should go to the library to rent out a laptop, so we can write and send a letter to the email address that was given to us, but Alyssa said she had her own laptop in her backpack. So we walked about to our original spot at the table near Dudley Moorhead Hall. Once at the table, we started to come up with a way to send the email, and to ask permission to set up a bin for composting. Finally Alyssa sent the email, while we waited, we discussed on how we can built a wooden compost

The temperature outside was 73 degrees, but fuses were blowing at Tuesday’s City Council meeting. Continuing business from October’s meeting, councilmember Dale Reynolds requested that a special meeting be held in the interest of homelessness in the city. Having that meeting in the Multi-purpose Room with department heads from city agencies, two council members met on Wednesday to put their heads together to implement a way, to solve the ever growing problem. “Homeless people, whether they have mental illnesses or drug addictions, or a combination of both, still need to be treated with respect and dignity,” Reynolds said. “We need to help these people, not sweep them under the rug, or put them on buses and ship them out of town.…

I pat Paul's shoulder as he blushes and pick up my heavy knapsack. I walk to my own locker a hall and a half over, but I bump into someone and gasp as something cold and slimy drips down my front. From the cackles behind me, it doesn't take much to guess it wasn't an accident, and the only person would actually cackles is, Sandra Wilkins.…

With the advancement of modern medicine following the second world war came an exponential increase in the world’s population. With this staggering growth came an accelerated use of resources, which are not being replaced. This has led to the rise of environmentalism, a movement based on using less, in an effort to better protect the earth. James Hamblin, a senior editor and journalist for the Atlantic, is a proponent of this movement. In his article, “Living Simply in a Dumpster,” Hamblin highlights the ideas and motives behind Jeff Wilson’s, a college dean and professor, choice to live in a dumpster.…

Racial tensions at the University of Missouri (Mizzou) have recently consumed media headlines. “Some black students say they are greeted with piercing stares when they walk by white-dominated fraternity and sorority houses” (Eligon, 2015). It all started when student Briana Gray returned to her dorm room and a picture of a black woman being lynched had been hung up on the door. Her roommate replied that her friends put it up as a joke. Ms. Gray ended up attacking the girl and her friends, and police broke up the fight.…

I felt that I trip to farm services was underwhelming. I was shocked by how little waste was located on their fields for University of approximately 15,000 students, including the staff and visitors. There were only 20 piles (at most) and composting takes a few months, which suggests that not much compostable waste is going there. Furthermore, it means that much, if not most, of the waste is going to landfills from Cornell. Also, I was under whelmed by the lack of equipment they had to heat and maintain the piles.…

Walking up the five flights of stairs, harsh to those who don’t work out quite as often as they should, and alas we’ve made it to...a locked door. Leanne Quinn and I are attempting to find the CAS Greenhouse that was recently discovered from an Internet search concerning urban agriculture around Boston, and or specifically, Boston University. We hope to learn that something has come of our efforts, but to avail. However, a very cool hideaway and homework/lounge area has been duly noted. In our efforts to find the hidden (even though it’s literally on the top of the biggest building on campus) treasure, we sought to see if the CAS Greenhouse contributed to the dining hall produce at all therefore allowing Boston University to become “self…
