Our founders Douglas and Susan Tompkins are who started the business. We started off as retail store selling high-performance climbing and backpacking equipment. Some people may not know that many people did not go backpacking prior to The North Face becoming a business. Many people bought their jackets and other sup plies from surplus stores. There is something else people may not know, we originally did not use to manufacture our products, we simply were a high end ski, mountaineering and camping store. The iconic logo is of Half Dome in Yosemite National Park. As for the name, that came from the fact that the north faces of mountains in the northern hemisphere are colder and more technically challenging due to the lack of sun. A few years after opening we moved our location to the other side of San Francisco Bay into the Berkley area. …show more content…
By the 1980’s we added extreme ski wear to our product offerings, and by than were the very first to have products outdoors people loved. In the 1990’s is when we launched our new product line Tekware, it was designed to provide rock climbers, backpackers, hikers, trail runners, and outdoor enthusiasts the best fit and friction. By then we also launched our own line of trekking and trail running shoes. In 1997 we adopted our mission statement, “Never Stop Exploring.” The “Athlete Tested” line also came out this year. Now up through the 2000’s to about 2015, we have come up with many more product lines and better ways to enhance our products and keep our products life style. The most recent product line we released was the Thermoball jacket. It’s light weight and will keep you warm and uncontrollable weather conditions.
