Walnut trees are considered one of the most versatile types of trees around the world. They can be found all over North America as well as overseas in Europe and parts of Asia. Also, they are very durable and have long life spans. One major characteristic of these trees are the fruit they produce. The fruit, walnuts, is sought after by the food industry and others. Its wood however is highly valued and sought after for its hardness and durability. Furniture manufactures use its wood to manufacture cabinets, chairs, tables, and caskets.
Hickory. A significant trait of hickory trees is the stiff, shock resistant, and very hard wood. It’s this combination that sets it apart from other types of wood in industry. Hickory is also highly sought after for wood burning stoves and smokers. Here in the south Hickory is the preferred type of wood used to smoke meats and barbeque. Personally one of my favorite types of trees, bald Cyprus flourishes in the state of Louisiana and along the Gulf States. Usually found in or near water sources this deciduous tree is known to be one of the oldest living plant species in our portion of the country and is also known as Louisiana’s state tree. Cypress is known for its high merchantable yields. It is very resistant to water, insects, and rot. Industries don’t use cypress on a large scale because of its slow growth and difficulty to harvest. However, it used to build boats, wood siding for homes, flooring, and cabinetry.
Southern Yellow Pine. This refers to three types of conifers that grow in the south, loblolly, longleaf, and shortleaf or slash pine. Pine is a heavy, stiff, and somewhat hard wood that is shock resistant. There is an abundance of pine trees because of their rapid growth which is one reason industries are favorable to it. Pine harvesting ranks as the number one economic source in my hometown and parish. Once harvested pines can be used for many different products, mostly paper products.
