Wonder Palacio Character Analysis

In Wonder, Palacio underscores two social values: the importance of kindness and of using life to positively impact people. Over and over again, Palacio stresses how much treating others with kindness will impact their lives. She even states through the character of Auggie’s teacher, “If you act just a little kinder than is necessary, someone else, somewhere, someday, may recognize in you, in every single one of you, the face of God.” Auggie’s struggles not only humanize the struggles of disabled people, but also illustrate the insecurities that all people have. From this, they understand that kindness or the lack of it can make or break a person. More importantly, Palacio stresses the value of knowing the true meaning of life, which is to positively impact others. At the end of the novel, Auggie knows without a shadow of a doubt that despite his shortcomings, his …show more content…
Many children’s books fall flat with older audiences, but the depth of Wonder’s message reaches across generations. Through the story of fifth graders, Wonder perfectly captures the struggles of wanting to find acceptance and love. Palacio’s points will have readers recognizing themselves in Auggie’s insecurities, but also in the thoughts of his bullies. They will see themselves in the girls who giggle and the parents who stare and realize their effect on other people. Many novels today focus on what the bullied or insecure person can do to improve their self-esteem, but Palacio proposes what others should do to improve the self-esteems of those around them. Look beyond first impressions and appearances and truly get to know others for their unique and beautiful selves.
