Women's Sports Case Study

Women’s sports receive unfair media coverage compared to men’s sports. Women play the same sports as men, but women do not have the same opportunity as men do to publicize their incredible talents and athletic abilities because they aren’t covered fairly in the media. The media chooses to give men’s sports an astronomically greater amount of coverage compared to women’s sports. “In a study done by researchers at USC from 1999-2009, they found that men’s sports received 96.3 % of airtime compares to the measly 1.6% of airtime for women” (Page 4 USC report). That 1.6% of airtime is a decrease from when women’s sports coverage peaked at 6.3% in 2004. The media is outright sexist! television networks know that there are men’s and women’s sports, but they clearly place more importance on men’s sports than women’s sports. In 2004, women’s sports were only on television 6.3% of the time, but that apparently was way too much, so they decreased it. It is not as if networks added more men’s sporting events and kept the number of women’s sporting events the same. In the “Handbook of Sports and Media” published in 2006, Dr. Bryant Jennings has analyzed from from previous studies that during men’s contests, the camera angles and the editing of visuals, were technically sophisticated, stylish, and had high production values. The broadcasters of the games were amongst the most experienced and well respected in the sports industry. The sound quality was crisp, clear, and understandable.
