Women's Rights Video Analysis

Well, I'm just speechless. As someone who has seen most "shock" or "reaction" videos on the internet, including terrorists beheading people, I found this video surprisingly heinous. Seemed a little to real to me. It literally caused me physical discomfort to watch. I will begin with addressing FGM... Not even as a women's rights issue, but a HUMAN rights issue. I found it disturbing to see the absolute delight and glee on the woman performing the "operation" (let's not glorify it by referring to it as that) on that young girl...what elation was rampant in that atmosphere, with those women watching one of their kind bawling and writhing in agony. Disgusting. So back to the assignment...I have points to address here, because I could go on ALL …show more content…
Some members of these societies, both men and women, claim as broad and diverse seemingly disjointed reasons as tradition, a sign of submission to deity, propriety and common decency, hygiene benefits, emotional and cognitive clarity, among many others. It is met with much criticism in most if not all countries where it takes place, by a burgeoning, "pro women's rights" group of individuals that are very vocal in their disdain for the practice. This opposition, while the minority, are rapidly gaining influence and sway, and stand to dramatically upset the legality surrounding many of the traditional customs that are associated with FGM. Will the acts still go on unabated within the underground? Undoubtedly...there are too many men AND women who will help keep it concealed from the legal factions. Not to mention the authorities that will be suffering from a "conflict of interest", as they secretly support the act itself. This is all speculative, because, in most cases at least, the FGM dissenters have not gotten it made an illegal act as of yet. Perhaps the people living in these areas where it commonly takes place are savvy enough to realize "Hey: This is getting a lot of publicity, and going in a direction counter to the one which I am desiring, so maybe I need to be very discreet and selective with whom I share my secrets." A dope dealer is not going to take out public ads in the local newspaper, advertising his shady business venture, now is he? Not unless he somehow desires to be "closed for business" by that day's evening." Be leary of outsiders, and confide only in those closest to you...Preferably those that are directly involved and assist in the process." Sort of like an honor amongst thieves: They will keep each other "honest", as they each have "dirt" on the other, and are partaking in

From the 1776 to 1876, nearly a century, women’s rights were slowly becoming key highlights in society. Prior to this, women were uneducated and remained in the home only being required to cook and care for the children while their husbands worked. However, once industrialization began, cities formed, and population skyrocketed, housing became more expensive, so the women had to work and help support the family financially. Then came the Second Great Awakening; women became inspired and realized that they were just as good as men and had the same abilities as them. With that, they went forth and sought out societal reforms.…

In Andi Zeisler’s article, “Career Girls and Wonder Women: The Televised Feminist,” the main character Zeisler is evaluating is Mary Tyler Moore and the woman she represents in the world. The media has represented her as a working woman who puts her job before romance and she was always doing grunt work, ex: typing and getting coffee for others (76). While we, as an audience, see this woman as a cute office woman who is “spunky” and eager to work she sees herself as a woman who is capable of doing things that media has portrayed her character to act. She is represented in an office where men are getting paid more, have better work, and surrounded by uneducated male coworkers. She grows as a character and become respected in the workplace once she shows that she has the ability to do just as well and any other person in…

In the video we see alot of people who were sterilized as punishment to whatever they had done and that is simply ridiculous. We had 8 year olds being sterilized because their teacher thought they were flirting with a boy. It is very cruel and unusual punishment yet the United States still allowed for it to happen. Even things such as cases where a girl gets raped and is sterilized because they say she was the one that put it upon herself. This is most definitely cruel and unusual punishment from the government.…

Female circumcision, genital cutting, and female genital mutilation all describe the same cultural practice, but each has its own connotation. When journalists attempt to inform readers upon this practice, there are personal assumptions and connotations that, if not addressed properly, perpetuate an ethnocentric point of view. In this paper, I compare and analyze two American newspaper articles: the daily Minneapolis/St. Paul Star Tribune’s “Minnesota Somalis see chance to lead fight against female genital cutting” and the weekly Newsweek’s “Female Genital Mutilation on the Rise in the U.S.” In analyzing these articles, I apply Claudie Gosselin’s discussion on cultural relativism to the practice of female circumcision as mentioned in her article,…

A better understanding of FGC is needed greatly in places like the European Union and the United States where some refugees and immigrants from Africa have brought the traditions of FGC with them. Since the mid-1990s with an influx of publicity, growing awareness and public condemnation of the practice has led to the passage of legislation criminalizing FGC in 24 African countries and 12 industrialized countries (WHO 2013). Some women who refuse to be cut have been able to successfully seek asylum or have avoided deportation by maintaining that they have fled their home countries in order to avoid the operation. However, efforts to protect women and girls can backfire when immigrant or refugee mothers in the United States, for example, seek…

The article, “Hands Off Clitoridectomy” by Yael Tamir, discusses the controversial topic of clitoridectomy, and all the arguments within the subject while opening up a new way of perceiving it by comparing it to our own society and practices. She suggest that indeed the practice of clioridectomy is a gruesome and gutwrenching, but there is more to the subject than just the moral issues of it. She address the political and social aspects of performing and living with the procedure and addresses them with passive but firm arguments. Her main point of the article is that our society needs to stop judging and creating prejudices aimed at other cultures or societies when in fact we could be bettering our own society rather than critiquing others.…

Linking Detrimental Traditions to The Lottery Influential, award-winning author Shirley Jackson depicts a dystopian society in her world-renowned short story “The Lottery”. Jackson irrefutably illustrates how society can follow antiquated traditions to their detriment; consequently, empowering readers to form cogent connections to equivalently destructive traditions. Calamitous practices are present in multifarious countries in contemporary society: the tradition of female genital mutilation, child brides, and the stoning of women for adultery connect with the issues within the text. A multitude of communities around the world practice a procedure constructed to demolish sexual pleasure: female genital mutilation.…
