At the time of her death, it is rumored, that her boyfriend shots her after leaving church. Which leaves Mister alone with two children to care for, and no idea how, so he has to take on another wife. Celie was not his first choice, her sister Nettie was but their father said no, she is to young, and that he heard the rumors of Mister first wife death. Nettie runs away to live with her sister but Mister tries to make advances on her and Nettie ends up running away for the home Mister and Celie share. Mister hide the letter Nettie write Celie, and it is not till later that she gets to read them. Women’s Rights Movement in the U.S. states, in 1976, “the first marital rape law is enacted in Nebraska, making it illegal for a husband to rape his wife” (Imbornoni), 46 years after this novel takes place. Women’s right have transition along way, and still we women as whole, have not meet all of our goals, but there is still time for these changes to be made. We have yet to match women’s pay to that of a man’s pay or even seen our first female president but history is in the making, and with time, we will over come these obstacles. The 19th amendment of The United States Constitution opened up doors for women, and even thought we made all these advancements for our right, we still see domestic violence everyday. The novel had the cycle broken but not every story has a happy ending, spouse beat, and abuse the people they say they love, everyday. More needs to be done to protect women, and children from this senseless violent act. Harsher punishment, and laws can only do so much, if women do not take the proper steps in helping each other. Todays tradition gender role’s have shifted, making a stronger impact of society, and taking women out of the kitchen, and into the work place.
