Women's Rights Activist: Emma Watson

From young witch to women’s rights activist, my admiration for Emma Watson has yet to wane. She is undoubtedly deserving of the high esteem I hold for her. A well-known actress, Watson has stood out not only for her roles as a know-it-all witch and troubled teen, but as a heavy advocate for gender equality. At but age 26, Watson has made her mark and become a role model for girls and women around the world. I can only hope that I can one day make as much of an impact on someone as she has on me. A hard-working, self-motivated, inspiring young woman, she not only speaks about the issues but acts on them as well.

As a child utterly obsessed with the Harry Potter franchise, I can still remember my family and friends insisting I could have played the role of Hermione myself. A smart young lady who knows exactly what she wants in life, I suppose some similarities were evident. I am aware that we are talking about the actress, not the role she played, but anyone who knows anything about Emma Watson will agree that she is pretty much the real-life Hermione Granger (minus the magic, of course). While Hermione fought for the work rights of house elves, Watson parallels such fights for the rights of the oppressed in the real world. A UN Goodwill Ambassador, Watson’s philanthropic works and humanitarian efforts have not gone unnoticed. Her battle for gender equality and human rights has included speeches at the UN for the launch of her HeForShe campaign and trips to third-world countries to promote education for all girls. Though not as large-scale as her efforts, I too have attempted to help my community through school campaigns and events aimed at promoting awareness of unfortunate areas such as breast cancer, domestic violence, and homelessness in
