Men are found to have had an unfair advantage throughout the work industry. In workplaces, researchers find that men are receiving promotions based on potential and women by what they have contributed (Rivers). When faced with two people for a job, ⅔ times men were chosen even though women were made the better candidate (Rivers). …show more content…
The wage gap has been closing but still open. As of now, for every dollar a man makes a woman make 79 cents. Pay between the two sexes has been addressed since the late 1800’s and hasn’t had much change (Alter). Although this problem has been clear for a while, it is still present in today's society. There are many protests about this topic and even an equal pay day set for April 4th which resembles how much more work women have to do after a year to make the same amount a man in the same job made in a year. This is not only unfair but women generally need to buy products that men do not need. Women are stereotypically more expensive because of necessary feminine products and the pressure to live up to social norms (ex: makeup, expensive clothes, having hair/nails done professionally). Feminine products are “luxury taxed” around the world yet rogaine isn't. Rogaine helps hair growth, men go bald at an earlier age and more drastically than women (Kaeding). Feminine products are seen as a luxury, but many women will say otherwise, and many can say that having bald spots won’t make living as hard as women would have it without these so-called “luxuries”. It’s not fair for women who are paid less in the first place. While men can be harassed and discriminated it is mainly found that women are most likely to hear sexist comments and treatment directed towards them. A study found that on a daily basis women hear sexist jokes or treatment (Adams). This can lead to women thinking it’s okay or normal to hear these harming words and not address the situation. After that same study, it was found that “less intense forms of gender harassment (like office cultures where sexist jokes are tolerated) “appeared as detrimental for women’s occupational well-being” as the less frequent, high-intensity incidents (like sexual coercion and unwanted sexual attention)” (Adams). This can negatively affect women's well-being and mental state. If a person is unhealthy, mentally or physically, it can hurt their performance at work and home. “Well-being is a hugely significant aspect of our work and careers” (Young). If someone's performance at work is worse, they can be fired or lose an important position they worked hard for. And since women are receiving most of these negative comments they could not have the motivation to do well, which explains the wide gap of female and male dominated
