Since the start of 2016, increasingly more stories and news articles have appeared about women liberating themselves and their families. These women are choosing to breast feed in public, regardless of society’s ideas on its appropriateness. Why is a woman feeding her child seen as an inappropriate act in society? Woman are sexualized. A person sees a breast and it is immediately sexualized. Breasts are not sexual organs though, they are on the human body with the intent that they will be used to nourish a future life. In fact, Adriano Cattaneo described in the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health that this nourishment reduces the chances of cancer and has positive effects on intelligence and school performance. A woman should have the choice to make the decision on her own time. One study stated “Negative cultural perceptions of breastfeeding in public deter initiation and duration of breastfeeding” (Scott, 2). If society changes its ideals on public nudity, especially acts that are not even sexual, a woman could feel safe and willing to feed her baby wherever she pleases. Often breasts are used as marketing ploys and it is odd that that is normal and acceptable to society, but just a simple act as an infant sucking on its mother’s nipple is seen as negative and gross. One thing that can change to make this negative stigma dissipate is having proper sex education in middle and high schools. This will lead to future generations having real knowledge and facts on what the purpose of a breast is. Those that advocate against and fight mothers who breast feed in public often claim they do not want their young boys seeing an uncovered breast. To those young boys, they will not think anything of it, especially if they have not hit puberty. Nothing is sexual until someone makes it that way, so those accusers are the ones turning an innocent act into one that is not so innocent. Furthermore, breastfeeding in public is legal in almost every state, as noted by Huffington Post writer Jessica Samakow. The only state where there is not any protection for breastfeeding mothers is Idaho. Due to these laws that protect breastfeeding mothers, those that fight breastfeeding mothers need to rethink their decision. It is a naturally born right of mothers that they can breastfeed, the only problem is being sexualized. More laws need to be enacted to protect women from being sexual objects in media.
