Feminism Essay Examples

The traditional definition of the word Feminism is “The advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men” . Though this definition may be functional, it is not what is commonly thought of when the word comes up. Many people today have stereotyped the word and changed the definition from societies view. It has made many women not want to be associated with the term feminist, because for many is it a derogatory term used to put people down. How did this term come to be such a degrading term? This all has to do with where it is seen, who uses this term in an unflattering way, and how that affects the word and the people associated with it as a whole. In today’s society, the derogatory association with the word feminism is seen everywhere, specifically on many social media sites. There have been many cases of putting down feminism, such as the hashtags #feministsareugly and #feminismisawful. It makes many not want to be known as a feminist and thus weakening the feminist movement. Still today many women are very interested in what men think and say about them, and so women do not want themselves to be seen as unattractive because they stand up for what they believe in. The second thing this stereotype does is makes women weaker as a people. They allow men to think what they want and they are so moved by it that they don’t want to speak up, thus giving them that power they crave. This then makes men feel stronger, and puts down females even more. If women don’t stand up for what they believe in, then they aren’t showing that there is a problem, and that hurts the entire female
