That logic is deplorable and should be rejected at every instance. The monster of patriarchy and gender roles should be destroyed immediately, because beauty pageants are keeping women in the past. The notion of beauty being a woman’s most important aspect is absolutely sickening. With this idea, women are seen as only good for sexual interaction and pleasure, domestic tasks, and aesthetic pleasure. The former pageant contestants that defend the pageant were benefited by the pageant because they fit that narrow mold of beauty. In their eyes, it is a harmless-if not helpful-program, but it does not help the millions of American women that need money and are deserving of a scholarship, but do not fit that absolute mold that the pageant has created. The former pageant contestants also talk about how pageants developed their speaking skills and confidence, but that is simply not true. Those former pageant contestants already had the speaking skills-they just needed to channel those speaking skills by going into an interview and letting nature take over. The Miss America pageant takes intelligent, talented, incredibly accomplished women, while excluding many other women, and turning them into sexualized objects in order to see which woman is the most beautiful for a scholarship. This ideology is sexist and exclusive, and it is unfair for the women who are incredibly accomplished, but do not fit the beauty norm that the pageant draws. The pageant draws a line of demarcation between the pageant contestants and the female transgender community, the female intersex community, women of different races and colors, and women of different races and body types. In order to fight for equality and empowerment, women should stick together.
