Hillary Clinton has proposed other alternatives for immigrants that have come here illegally and they don’t pose a flight or public safety risk. If they have a criminal record or they are acting violently, they would stay in the detention center; otherwise she would like for these people to be on a supervised release. She is against privately owned immigration detention centers because, “these corporations treat detainees like criminals and prevent them from seeking legal representation” (Mook 2001). Clinton would like for the government to own the detention centers instead of privately owned companies. According to Clinton, “private corporations and private industry incentives that may contribute- or have the appearance of contributing- to over-incarceration” (Mook 2001). In 2006, Clinton voted for the construction of the wall along the Mexican-American border, also known as the Secure Fence Act of 2006, when she was the senator of New York. In 2007, Hillary Clinton supported to not give illegal immigrants a driver’s license, and she said this in her run against Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential elections.
Hillary Clinton may have said these things in the past, but she might not have known what she was talking about then. Clinton could have changed her mind on these issues because she has visited Mexico many times since then. She has also learned about many immigrations situations when she was secretary of state and she was then able to better understand international affairs and understand the plight of people trying to immigrate to the US.
In either case, Hillary Clinton’s immigration reform will work with the current immigration problem the United States is currently facing. Clinton’s immigration reform will create an easier path to citizenship for current illegal immigrants, incoming immigrants, and future immigrants. Her immigration reform will also close private detention centers to humanize the immigration enforcement by having the authorities view illegal immigrants as human beings and as equals.
