Women and unequal pay is a normal social issue has been existing on the world stage for decades. Since President Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act (EPA) in 1963, women have earned 59 percent for every dollar that earned by men. Today, the pay gap became narrowed but still exists with women earning 79 percent for every dollar earned by men (Hallman). In the report of Gender Pay Inequality, the past several decades the women have earned college and graduate degrees are increasing. The research of 2012-2013 school year, the bachelor’s degree earned 57 percent by female, 60 percent of master and 51 percent of doctor degree. However, the gender pay inequality still exists and female who have the higher degree that facing the larger gap than the female who earned lower degrees. For instance, the national gender pay gap is 21 percent and the salary gaps with a bachelor’s degree are 29 percent which is larger than the national gender pay gap. The government in the report mentions that the reason for this data because the women prefer to choose the lower paying field as major. For example, the male usually chooses the major like computer science, chemistry, physics or mathematics that can get higher-paying works. However, women prefer to study like social science, education, media or nursing which is leading lower pay works. To pursue the higher education is still an important step to narrow the unequal pay gap, but the precondition is choosing the major needs to be cautious. The beginning of the jobs not only decides the salary that people get, also decide the future benefits. For example, the higher salary at the beginning has direct connection with future retirement benefits. Decisions of children, marriage or caregiving jobs are all the critical role of salary gap. Then, AAUW suggests people to developing negotiation skills. Negotiation skills could help women to bring out the real value on the table, and make clear the attitude of the company, it will bring the effective result for women.
