By pursuing their academics, women are putting their families to the side and focusing on themselves. Women have been told so many times that they can’t have it all. Marie Anne Slaughter in her famous editorial called “Why Women Still Can’t Have it All,” emphasized that women, as well as men, are unable to have it all because of workforce and cultural structures. In other words, because of the glass ceiling and wage gap, women already have to work harder than men to reach their goals. There are cultural structures in our society that cause people to assume those who work longer hours are more dedicated to their jobs than those who don’t stay late so that they can go to their son’s game or pick their daughter up from daycare. The role of being a caregiver and having a professional career in today’s society are constantly clashing with each other. Therefore, women in the Millennial generation are focusing strictly on their goals. They can still get in these relationships and have a partner that they care about. However, through marriage comes a larger commitment and pressure which can potentially pull them away from their goals.
