Imagine a female overseas with her unit, not only fighting the enemy, but also facing the extreme and harsh climates. The idea of women in the military brings forth many questions about their different roles. Do women have the physical abilities to close with and destroy the enemies they would go against in combat? Do they have the stamina to face the fatigue of the environment and long hours? The mission of the infantry relies on the infantryman exclusively to accomplish this mission, face to face with the enemy. After 9/11, female deployment increased drastically. Likewise, some women are even more fit or in better physical shape than some of the men sent to combat (“Women in Combat...”). As long as the person is qualified for the job and nothing is being handed to anyone, one’s gender should not matter. As Jeff Mapes, retired Command Sergeant Major, claims “I have served with several outstanding soldiers during my almost thirty years of service.
