Decent Essays
Women should be allowed to dress in way they want to wear. Hardly a woman gets the chance to express herself. Why? They do not want to be judged and hear people gossip about the way they dress. It’s tough to be a woman. As in schools, dress codes are the biggest issue. Girls are told to cover up or wear appropriate clothing. Unknown young woman wrote, “I’ve been told by a teacher that the way I was wearing my socks made me look like a prostitute in my first year of school…. I’ve been asked whether I’m ashamed of myself because of the way I rolled my skirt up” (qtd. in time). The young woman was only 13 when the teacher called out on her. Because of this, it brought embarrassment to her but also for the girls. For instance, in Hmong culture

Reporter, Tara Deschamps published a report on dress codes on Toronto students. Alex Halket had never been suspended or expelled in her 14 years of being in school. Nevertheless, it came to pass when she decided to go to class in a bare midriff with sleeveless and black patterned crop top. Since then, she has not stepped in her principal’s office. Halket’s vice principal pulled her into the office and told her that the dress code was too inappropriate and looked too much like a bra.…

Whether it be the dress code, stereotypes or who happens to be wearing a uniform. At Cedartown High School we have a dress code that we have to follow. The dress code abides by Polk School District policy and consists of a small number of rules. A couple of these rules inhere of “No holes above mid-thigh,” and “Shirts/tops must fit so that there are no exposed undergarments” (PSD Code of Conduct).…

The article says that instances have occurred where boys have been criticized by school employees for wearing clothing or accessories that are traditionally “meant” for girls. This is another large issue on its own. I was amazed to see an image that was included in this article of a young girl who was wearing what appeared to me to be a very appropriate and respectable outfit. Apparently, she had been…

I do not think that there is a possibility of not having a dress code. There are dress codes in place for many reasons. One reason is so that there is uniformity. It allows the clients to be able to distinguish who is an employee and who isn’t. It also creates a form of structure and discipline.…

These lax dress codes may reduce the amount of drug, gang and sex related issues, though they promote the act of bullying. A student who shows up to school in worn out clothes is prone to becoming an outcast to those who wear new clothes. Likewise, those who wear tight clothes are more susceptible to bully or be bullied by those who wear baggy clothes. As a result, many students segregate themselves from others which hinders their capability to acquire crucial life skills such as working with and feeling empathetic toward others. These issues can be reduced with ease by simply implementing dress codes much like those of charter schools.…

For my Argument Text Analysis, I choose the essay “Girls getting fed up with school dress codes that treat them as distractions” by Maureen Downey. This essay is about how girls are required to wear certain things to school for the reason that certain things are “distracting”. How girls are kept from their education since they are sent home for the things they wear. The writer is trying to persuade the reader that girls shouldn’t be required to wear certain things because the boys can’t control themselves.…

Ever since we started school we’ve had to deal with dress code. However, schools have different rules such as whether you have to wear uniforms or how short your skirts can be. My elementary school required us to wear uniforms and as the years went on the dress code got progressively stricter. When I moved on to high school it wasn’t much better. They would constantly send people to the office to get a change of clothes, but by doing this they also removed students from their classes, making them fall behind.…

Everyone has their own opinion on what attire is appropriate for school; some people may feel that some of the clothes that the girls wear is “too much”, but what exactly is too much? A majority would say that revealing shoulders and bra straps are inappropriate, but others would think differently. While some of the clothes people wear shouldn’t be worn in a learning environment, society shouldn’t be biased and make a fair dress code for both male and female students because it can make female women students ashamed of their bodies, which is degrading and makes them out to be sexual objects. With male students having the privilege to wear almost whatever they want, it makes females feel like they should cover up their bodies due to the fact that their bodies can distract boys from getting an education.(Since a females education isn’t as important). There has been many incidents where a female student would be taken out of class or sent home because her shoulders were showing or was wearing shorts on a hot day.…

The effects of social control on women’s dress can still be seen in societies today. It is especially severe in grade schools and high schools across America. These young girls are restricted on what they are allowed to wear because they can’t be “distracting” to boys in their classes. Shorts and dresses must be a long length, and shoulders and collarbones cannot be exposed. Some schools are more strict than others, but irregardless the issue of the dress code still persists.…
