1. The first insight I gained from the reading “Women Rising: The Unseen Barriers”, is becoming leader involves internalizing a leadership identity and developing a sense of purpose. I know for many including myself, trying to figure out what type of leader you want to be can be challenging. The most important thing to developing your leadership identity is knowing who you are a person and what strengths you can offer to achieve your goals. I believe having that foundation will aid in creating a sense of purpose. Something else that was said in the reading that also connects with this insight is “Becoming a leader involves much more than being put in a leadership role, acquiring new skills, and adapting one’s style to the requirements of that role. It involves a fundamental identity shift”. Having all the leadership skills in the world won’t make you a better leader, but knowing who you are and what message you want to represent will.

She uses a glass vase to describe how people stay within this perfect confined space, disconnected from the world because they’re trying to live up to expectations that hinder them from developing their authentic self. She asked a question to the audience that was so inspiring to me: “If you were given the choice would you keep the glass vase perfectly intact, knowing it represents your fears and living an unfulfilling life or would you smash it into a million pieces?”
APPLICATION
The internalizing a leadership identity insight I feel will help me with my current and future work goals. As I continue to go through college I will learn more about myself which will help develop my leadership
