Aibileen is a 53 year old Negro maid who works for Elizabeth Leefolt, a stay at home mother. Aibileen specializes in caring for children and was a devoted Christian. Not only did she choose to go to college instead of settling down and starting a family, she never understood why people treated blacks unfairly. She thought of her childhood maid Constantine as a mother figure and was lost when she left. To fill the void, she started a job at a newspaper writing cleaning articles. She approached Aibileen for advice on cleaning, and soon enough they were writing a book together that they had to publish anonymously to protect themselves. The publishing of Help caused Skeeter to end her relationship with her boyfriend, lose her place in a club and become the enemy of everyone in that club, which was pretty much all the women in the town. She moved to New York to start fresh.
The sacrifices that these women made to publish the book made theirs and many other people’s lives extremely difficult. Many men and women were fired from their jobs, blindly accused of stealing and their reputations tarnished. Though they’ll never get to see it happen, they all understand that better days are just around the corner for generations to
