Literature Review According to Judith Berman Brandenburg, Assistant Professor and Counseling Psychologist, Department of Student Personnel, Queens College of the City University of New York, “many of these women are returning to school at what some would call middle motherhood, typically between the ages of 35 and 45.” Brandenburg goes on to say, many of these women returning to school is more situational than related to their age (1974). Brandenburg’s journal called “the needs of women returning to school” focused on women returning to school after a break in their formal education. O’Shea and C. Stone at the University of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia entitled “Transformations and self-discovery: mature-age women’s reflections on returning to university study.” This study shows 18 women over the age of 30, with at least one child still living at home. (O’Shea and Stone)(2006). These women were originally part of a much broader study which included a group of all women first in their family to go to college, and the second group was a combination of both men and women at the average age of about 40 years old, as stated in the paper by O’Shea and Stone. The motivation for the 18 women varied between wanting to improve their chances for better job opportunities, to growing in their current job. A larger factor that was addressed according to O’Shea and Stone was the financial aspect of going to a university, which was addressed in the conclusion suggesting that there should be programs available to offer extra financial help to the “mature aged” student. The women recognized other attributes about themselves through this study such as the ability to succeed and do well. The thought was to find out why women over 40 return to school taking into consideration any children in the home would be at least in high school. All the research had been done, specifically for women over 40 that would be basically starting life for themselves. When you are a mother raising small children, they are your focus and pretty much the basis of all your choices and decisions. This study wanted to focus on women that are past the small children phase of their lives. They are able to make choices for themselves that would enhance the family life. But because of the timing of the study due and the amount of volunteers available, the study was changed to cover women that were over 30 years old or older. This changed the expectations of the study. The expectation became the challenges and needs of the 30 somethings would be different than the challenges and needs of the women 40 years old and older. All of the participants are seeking higher learning to help others. Whether a Nutritionist, Registered Nurse, Peace Officer, or Social Worker/Counselor, all of these positions give the ability to offer help as a
