According to article writer Herbert Buchsbaum, who writes for the Scholastic Update, “Hollywood has made some progress in portraying women … the image of female characters in movies has steadily improved since the 1960s, reflecting the role of women in society” (Buchsbaum). Despite this men still dominated the playing field, being cast as the lead role more often than not and do still today, having more leads and plot advancing speaking lines than their female counterparts. In fact, based on a study by Women’s Media Center in 2012, the percentage of speaking roles in movies showed that barely 28.4% of women key plot advancing lines. This shows a decrease in percentage from nearly 30.3% in 2010 and 32.8% in 2009. On average only 43% of women had speaking or major roles in television the 2012-13 year. It was also found that out 855 of the most financially successful U.S. films from 1950 to 2006, there were two male characters for each female character (Dockterman). Although The Invasion was quoted to be the lamest version of Jack Finney’s classic novel, New York Times writer Manohla Dargis describing it as being “abhorrent” with the movie trying to “hide its ineptitude behind a veil of pomposity” (Dargis), it was still the first of its reboots to feature a woman as the main character.
