Women In The Infantry Summary

Retired U.S. Marine Corps Colonel Charles E. Rice wrote this article. The full title of the article is Women in the Infantry: Understanding the issues of Physical Strength, Economics, and Small Unit Cohesion. In the article the author discusses these topics as they relate to the current debate of full inclusion of women into the U.S. Military infantry. The article starts by describing a change in the laws regarding women in combat signed January 24th 2013 by Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta. Panetta rescinded the then current order that prohibited women from holding a military occupational specialty in the combat arms field. This article states the author’s opinion that there is no justification for this change and backs up that opinion in …show more content…
Colonel Rice states these statements are flawed and asks the readers to look past the current conflict to the bigger picture and long term ramifications. However, the author is careful not to discredit the women who have faithfully and courageously risked their lives and fought honorably during the current conflicts. The author implores the public to look past the current counterinsurgency wars to a full conflict against a nation state where conscription could be necessary. He states that current optimal demographic based on physical requirements is not only the best way to eliminate unqualified draftees, it is also the most economical. The author goes on to cite studies that have been done on the differences of men and women’s physical performance under a full combat load. One study found that men wearing cumbersome personal protection equipment performed better in the tests than women who performed the same test without the added gear. In his article the author brings up the economics of training women for infantry service, the much higher failure rate of women to men makes the costs …show more content…
Although looking at the issue from an economic standpoint might come across as base, I think he brings a very good argument to the table. I also found the studies that he cited as compelling and accurate in regard to what I saw while in the military. As a female veteran I appreciated that the author did not discount the contributions of women in the military. His arguments are sound and well supported. He gives full credit to the women who have served in various operations that put them in harms way and said that they filled a vital gap. However, he does say that there is a difference in the roles that women have been filling and full ground combat operations. I found the authors tone to be respectful and his points thought provoking. Although supporters of full integration may tear the arguments apart I feel they would have a hard time fully discrediting any of them

Clemmitt also points out that despite the restrictions some women have secretly participated in ground combat, thus demonstrating that women’s role in the military is becoming more important (Clemmitt). Clemmitt’s piece gives excellent and real examples of actual women in military and their experiences and achievements that prove McGregor’s claims of women being skilled soldiers when it comes to combat. Female soldiers like Morgan and Dunwoody are not the only ones who have made remarkable achievements as women in the military, however they are among the few who have been recognized for their actions which supports that more women are capable of doing what Morgan and Dunwoody had…

As a modern, growing country America has supposedly overcome ideas such as strict traditional gender roles. Author Tarak Barkawi confronts this issue as he argues we have missed an area in our United States military. His article published in 2012 titled, “Equality in Army and Society”, harshly challenges the rules and regulations in the U.S army against women’s rights. Barkawi’s main point is, women do not have the same career opportunities due to traditional roles, masculinity in the military, and civilian ideas of gender roles. Barkawi states, “the army is one of the last redoubts of traditional masculinity”.…

Women in Combat Odierno states, “If you can meet the standards we’ve established, then you should be able to perform in that position, and that’s where we are headed.” In other words, Odierno asserts that even though you are a woman and want to go into combat forces, if you can meet the standards that have been established you are more than likely able to get into the combat position you’d like. Despite the fact that women should stay at home and fulfill their family needs, women have the right to choose whether or not to be in military forces because standards can be met and gender is nothing but an immutable characteristic. Women are the caretakers, the nurturers, and the one’s that make a house a home.…

Unable to move with blood gushing from the wound, you look around at your squad members. With all your combat gear you weigh in at roughly two hundred and twenty-five pounds.…

A specific legislation opposed the role of women in the military, it’s been a long contentious issue, one plagued by sexist notions that devalue women’s physical abilities and emotional maturity. Many feminists will recall that Phyllis Schlafly, architect of the Stop ERA movement, asserted that the Equal Rights Amendment would subject women to the draft and for that reason and a few others like unisex bathrooms, the amendment should be opposed. The National Organization for Women is a grassroots feminist organization. The strength of our endorsement lies with the support and enthusiasm that our members bring to the campaigns of candidates endorsed by NOW PAC. NOW…

Dating back to 1948 the Women’s Armed Services Act held female participation in the military at 2% and their highest obtainable rank being only Lieutenant Colonel (Harvey and Allard, 2015, p. 229). Foreign militaries were far more open towards women wishing to serve. The Soviet Union had more than one million women in their military, participating in a wide range of military units from snipers and tank units, to air defense and aviation. However, it was not until 1973, which was the first year of our current all-volunteer military model that women finally made up 2% of our armed forces. Prior to 1973 women made up as much as 3% of the military, but only in women specific auxiliary…

The U.S. military, including the Army, Navy, and Air Force, all practice gender integrated training. The Marine Corps train separately, yet they have a gender integrated program to follow their basic training. The military has employed many different approaches to the integration of men and women during basic training. These approaches range from using the same program of instruction for men and women and integrating some training units to using somewhat different programs of instruction and providing separate training (Gebicke, 1997).…

Richard Kemp insists that women would be an infantry's weakest link in a war and would lead to fellow soldiers being put in danger as a result of having a less suitable soldier at their side (Female). Kemp argues that this “social engineering experiment” will be “paid in blood” because only a fraction of the very few women who wish to join the military have the physical capability to do so. He has also asserted that women lack the “killer instinct” required to be a soldier (Female). While BBC News is a credible source this particular article seems to be very opinion based and biased against women, reducing its reliability. According to specialist Ashley Pullen during her time in the war she slept with her back to the wall so that if someone entered her trailer she could protect herself because “the chance of rape during wartime is high” (Mckelvey).…

“Perhaps the most important argument for maintaining gender equality at every level is that it’s necessary to truly enable women to have successful careers within the military”(the muse). The armed forces need to treat everyone equally no matter what gender. Women are allowed to be on the front lines if they choose to. No one can force someone to do something they don 't want to do either. Everyone has to pass the same recommendations to be in the armed forces and on the front lines not everyone wants to be there , if that where you want to be put the effort forward.…
