Veenstra (2011) established that significant degrees of discrimination exist in many different aspects of Canadian society, especially against poor women, and even more pronounced, against minority female populations.
The interventions from Elizabeth Fry in the early nineteenth century campaigning for women to be housed in separate prisons from men and have a safer facility. The prison system was developed by adapting a model that was designed for male prisoners. The treatment of women in prisons was based upon gender specific assumptions about women’s
