Hierarchies have often been dominant in the world for centuries and are still dominant in the world when it comes to business and the government. Hierarchies are used in life every day because people who are higher up usually have more power in the decisions those groups make. These hierarchies are usually prominent in the military where this type of order rules all the actions the military takes. Susan Faludi discusses how colleges that have a slightly strong association with the military (The Citadel) use hierarchies, in her essay “The Naked Citadel.” The way that these students are treated in a heavily ordered system forces one to think about how students in different school systems are treated.…
In Invisible Man, the trope of invisibility functions as a criticism of racist American society, but it also encompasses the novel's subtext of gender erasure. Both black and white females throughout the novel are underdeveloped and virtually invisible. In the novel, both black and white women are purposefully stereotyped and are exploited mainly by white men who seek to further their own interests and desires thus adding to the identity or role these female characters have in society. As women are shown their blatant lack of rights and freedom as an invisible woman, they seem to be on par with black people for having the lack of full freedoms in a white-male dominated society.…
When Ethan realizes Debbie (his niece) is captured, of course he is an enraged state of mind; he uses all his resources, time and energy to try and go save her from the Comanche. For oneself, we might agree with his angry actions if this occurred to us. This does not justify Ethan’s racial statements though. In one scene, her makes it clear that he rather have Debbie killed than living with the Comanche. This was due to the fact that the mixing of races was frowned upon.…
“A brave man’s blood is the best thing on this earth when a woman is in trouble” (page 138). This quote, coming from the famous novel Dracula, captures the message Bram Stoker creates in the novel about the roles of men and women. In the story, solicitor and nobleman Jonathan Harker is invited to Castle Dracula to finish a real estate transaction. He quickly becomes unsettled during his travels due to warnings, crucifixes, and charms given to him by local peasants. Yet, the mission continues, and he goes on through the many disconcerting obstacles to reach the residence, only to realize a few days later that he is now a prisoner of the castle.…
The literature piece of Sir Gawain and The Green Knight revolves around medieval knights with their chivalric values as well as their romantic ideologies of courtly love. The era in which this story took place was in a male-dominated culture, where the men were supposed to be brave, honorable and loyal on an everyday basis. The women of this era were subordinate and therefore followed and served these same men. Although the women were to serve the superior man they would also use their womanly charm to dominate them back to do what they wanted. If the knights were courting a lady, they were supposed to treat her respectfully and follow her commands as she wished.…

In a place of worship you would think they would want to build up their followers but instead during this time they tore them down but still made it appealing enough for them to continue their path of religion. Lily is learning that women are entitled to as much say in a matter as any man. Scout also saw this kind of sexism in the courtroom, women were not allowed to be apart of the jury on the grounds that they were not capable of hearing such horrific things and could not know the dangers that lie in front of them.…
Common day women have experienced a rise in power in their roles within films and novels as well as their roles within society as a whole. Unfortunately, the women of old weren’t held in such esteem. Their roles in literature were too often simply a branch of their husbands or fathers, no more important than property to be controlled or claimed. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Gawain is the main character being portrayed. Despite this, it is the women of the tale who hold power over the men as opposed to the reverse.…

The story is written in stanzas of alliterative verse, and each stanza ends in a rhyming wheel and Bob. It draws on Irish, Welsh, and English stories like in the French chivalry tradition.…

The last few decades’ women have been portrayed to be fragile on-screen. For years, women’s role on-screen was to stay home to clean, cook, and to care for their family. Women were not given leading roles in films or television shows; instead they were just given secondary roles where they did not speak. They are given roles where the main character is a male and they are presented as being defenseless. Now there are many roles that allow women to start in films and television shows with a variety of characteristics.…
In “The Female Link: Citation and Continuity in Watchmen” by Erin M. Keating, the author adds to the discussion of women in comics by negating that Watchmen was not an example of “the revisionary superhero narrative” because women were still being represented as conservative. Watchmen does not address the societal gender identities but rather it continues the gendered identities that were already in comic books. “In Adult Comics: An Introduction, Roger Sabin describes women in comic books as ‘‘invariably either plot devices (there to be rescued) or sex symbols (all plunging necklines and endless legs)’’. The author describes that Wonder Women was created as a sex symbol to appeal to male leadership by her creator, William Marston. Unlike Wonder…
In Maus women are not depicted as being capable as men, this occurs in Vladek’s relationships where the women are dependent on Vladek. The main female characters also have less depth compared to the main male characters, and can be more easily reduced down to “wife” or “mother”. In this book we get to see through the perspective of Art and his father, but never a female character. The female characters’ main purpose is to offer insight into the perception of a male character or a situation. This occurs with Françoise, we do not see much of her in the story, but when we do she is used to tell the reader how Art feels about his relationship with his father.…
