We can already tell that she is not a fan of El Salvador, and after hearing what she had to say, I’m not either. At the airport she was picked up by a taxi driver, who shared with her his opinion on girls. He told her about his daughter and when she asked if he wanted more children, he replied “yes, but only boys. Girls are a problem.” Women in El Salvador are raped and killed every day, and they are considered the problem. It is listed among the world’s deadliest countries for women, so it is understandable why the author does not feel comfortable with the idea of going back.

These are only the bodies that are recovered and brought to the morgue, there are countless others that are found in dumping grounds. The government has attempted to try and stop these horrific crimes, however they are not successful. Many women are raped and left pregnant and unprepared for the child they are about to produce. They are considered a big problem when they try to confront the police about the matter, or when they turn to a hospital for help. Women not only have to worry about gang members, but also their husbands, fathers, uncles, acquaintances, and neighbors who may rape them too. Women should not have to live in fear on the street and at home. They should be protected by the country, but instead are considered a big burden. Abortion is illegal in El Salvador, whether the women were raped or not. They are left with no choice but to have the baby and raise it. Women are not protected by the law. They cannot do their day to day tasks without the fear of danger in their path. Many women have fled the country because they do not feel safe there.
