Women In Combat Scandals

Scandals were also a huge factor when women were in combat with men. One person noted that "the infantry battalion had to send six women home from Iraq due to pregnancy." It did not matter if the soldiers were married or single, the number of pregnancy's occurring while on duty was tremendous. With women would leave because of pregnancy, it would leave the infantry short and soldiers would have to continue to pick up the slack. Women alone cannot be blamed for the scandal that occurs while in combat. Men are just as responsible as women and should be held just as responsible, it is not impossible for men to resist their urges and act professional. By restricting women from all military roles, the military is also restricting them from full citizenship and proper training. Women suffer from the combat restrictions because they never have the same opportunities as males to advance or earn the same wages. Because of the lack of advancement, women also end up losing any kind of status; resulting in harassment. “Women and men alike applaud these changes and urged further reform. Critics, however, claimed that a feminist social agenda was hurting the military and national agenda” (Brannen). Despite the arguments about physical limitations, it is a clear fact that it is possible for women to perform at the same level as men when provided proper training. With that argument being proven wrong, it leads to the idea of standards being lowered to be false as well. If no changes are made in the future to include women in all positions, then women will be less likely to join certain branches of the military knowing that they have no chance to advance. On the other hand, if changes are made to include women, then the military will be taking huge steps towards equality and will be setting a precedent for all other careers. In the end, this nation will not be equal until an organization as large as the military takes steps towards gender
