Confucius was an important government official in ancient china who developed a new moral code based on respect, honesty, education, kindness and strong family bonds. One of his theories was that “Women and servants are most difficult to nurture. If one is close to them, they lose their reserve, while if one is distant, they feel resentful.” This can help our understanding of ancient China and of Confucius’ teachings. Confucius puts women and servants in the same category because he viewed them they same way: unimportant and incompetent. Like servants, women were viewed as frivolous and impotent. In ancient Greece, women suffered many difficulties in social, economical, and domestic life. As stated in Women Of Ancient Greece, “In ancient Greece, women endured many difficulties and hardships especially in three main areas. The problems women encountered in this era occurred within marriage, inheritance and social life.” This shows that women living in Ancient Greece struggled with women’s rights and equality, similar to Ancient China. In India, since the Later-Vedic period, women started being treated unfairly, oppressed, and discriminated against. As stated in Role and Status of Women in Ancient India by Arnab Basu, “…women started being discriminated against since the Later-Vedic period in education and other rights and facilities. Child marriage, widow burning, the purdah and polygamy further worsened the women’s position.” This illustrates how the women in India were deprived of equality, dignity, and freedom from discrimination.
