Women In A Palace Painting Analysis

The screen painting, Women in a palace is a 286 x 752 cm screen painting during the period of Qing dynasty. This screen painting displays the tragic events that would be foul Wang Zhaojun. Since she would be delivered to Xiongnu a barbarian chieftain by Emperor Yuan to calm him down. The weird thing is that she is not drawn in the painting, but a horse standing under a willow tree represents her departure from her safe haven. The thing that surprises me the most was the screens condition. Its condition is in very good shape even dough its wood, which I would think it would rot. But then I read in the description that the medium was Black lacquer with mother-of-pearl and gold foil inlay because I search what this thing were and then that how I realized how the screen did not damage so much. That thought may never be answered since they are not alive during our time period. The other thing that interests me is why is the screen so big and did they use it as display piece or for normal uses like a dressing screen. Then comes the painting on the screen, which made me stand in amazement. This was because of all the detail and feeling that went into the painting. For example, the painter did not only used color but he also used thing like sand because when I looked at the painting some parts of it shined like sand getting hit by the suns ray. Another part of the painting that amazed me was that it was like looking inside the castle garden because everyone was having fun and partying. There was sometimes that I thought that the painting was telling a story because there were so many events in the painting that sometimes I felt confused on what was going on. For instance, there were part of a mountain inside the castle and my thought was why is their part of a mountain inside the backyard of the castle.
