Before the Industrial Revolution, people worked on the farms. When the Industrial Revolution began, instead of staying in the rural countryside people moved to the busy urban cities. The Industrial Revolution created new jobs for operating the machinery in mills and factories. The people who stayed in the countryside usually farmed just enough to provide for them and their families. They had no wages and there were fewer jobs offered on farms. As a result, the new machines and inventions replaced farm laborers. The factories offered more job opportunities and better wages. Both Britain and the America went from an agriculture-based society to an industrial powerhouse. In contrast to this, there were many countries that tried to industrialize but had no success. An example of this would be India. India tried to develop steel industries but could not succeed because they little investment capital and no government support. The idea and thoughts towards women stayed the same, withstanding the transformation caused by the Industrial Revolution. Wives despite their wealth and class, were expected to stay home and clean, prepare food, and do house chores. The moral virtues and status of women did not change from the Industrial Revolution. Although women were able to work in factories now, it did not change the fact that they were preferred to be a stay at home wife and mom. A woman’s most important duty was to take care of the family. Even if women worked outside the house, it did not rid them of their responsibility to their family. The status of women did not change because they were paid very little, worked stalemate jobs, and they could not contribute to politics. China had the same view on women. Nineteenth-century China followed the gender norms placed by Confucian. The wife was always subject to their husband’s authority.
