Rather than allow the worldview of half of the world’s population to be lost, Pamela McVay explains in her book, Envisioning Women in World History: 1500-Present, Volume 2 what women’s history is, how it differs from other types of history, and how different types of societies influenced the lives and history of women.
History is not just made up of events and facts, it is also how the events and facts affected the people during the time in which they occurred. Class, religion, and ethnicity all made a great deal of difference in how an individual was impacted by history, but undoubtedly the biggest deciding factor for an individual was gender. As a whole, foraging societies provided more gender equality between men and women then settled cultures, although the daily chores for survival were usually still divided into men’s tasks and women’s tasks. One of the reasons foraging societies were inclined toward this egalitarianism was because they did not view leadership as a position of permanence or power, instead leaders were chosen according to their capabilities for only a temporary amount of time. In his book Gender in World History, Peter N Stearns articulates how patriarchy was established, how cultural contacts changed it, how that system impacted women then and what that means for women today. This is shown by Western Europe’s gender roles and religion as well as their impacts on Native Americans and the Middle East. In Western Europe, patriarchy is already established because of Christianity and Catholicism. Thus when they went to places like America and the Middle East they brought those beliefs and their patriarchy. In the introduction to Part Two Stearns illustrates this by writing, “Europeans had very decided views about what was right and what was wrong where gender was concerned, and they were not shy about judging others or insisting on change (Stearns 57).”…

We remember history as just that: his story. Our textbooks and history specials remember our Founding Fathers, our brave male warriors, and insightful political leaders, yet passes over the influence and importance of their female counterparts as if they played no part. There may be a blurb regarding the bravery of women such as Harriet Tubman or Amelia Earhart, but for the most part, the significance of other women and their impact on their communities are overlooked. Perhaps this is de to the variety of misconceptions that involve women and how they act and behave, or perhaps also due to the the apparent distortion of historical events to portray them in ways more romantic or sensual than they actually were. Whatever the case, the study of…

Women throughout history faced discrimination, segregation, and inequality. Stanton points out that women have been confronted with an “overpowering [of] the feminine element everywhere” and that they have “scarce been recognized a power” (Stanton). Women, however have “diviner qualities” and hold love as a motive behind all actions (Stanton). Recognition of the power of women can be seen in their survival and by the care still given to others after generations of malfeasance against women. In his essay, Hughes writes, “Patriarchy triumphed when the Hebrews developed monotheism. Hebrew women were excluded from access to the covenant of males in a religion that allowed worship of only one male god” (Hughes 13).…

Laurel Thatcher Ulrich’s essay Well-Behaved Women Seldom Make History, is an excellent example of analytical social history, that is aimed to educate other historians, women, and others interested in social history (the history of groups that might not have participated in mainstream life), the intersectionality of women’s history, and pop-culture. Ulrich’s essay uses several rhetorical devices to create a convincing argument for the existence of collaborative history and the importance of social history, within more entrenched historical norms. Particularly, she uses different styles of narration, first focusing on her own personal life, then more typical historical examples, and finishes with a synthesis of her own personal story of historicization…
