The Middle Ages were a time of downfall and disease but also a time of enlightenment and growth. The Middle Ages cover a century in time and was the period between 476 and 1485. The rulers in this time ranged from The Franks to Charlemagne. Significant events in this time include ‘The Black Death’, ‘The Battle of Hastings’ and ‘The Crusades’. I’m going to expand on 2 particular topics: Women and Crime and Punishment.
Women
Heiresses and Duchesses didn’t do much and lived lives full of servants at their beck and call, they also had a lot of responsibility for the smooth running of a household and the care of her children. They were sold as sex slaves to noblemen who did as they pleased with them.
But some worked the same jobs as men. A slave life wasn’t as terrible as portrayed to be but some factors definitely took a toll, such as increasing taxes, which often led to people resorting to grass as food.
Women who were personal servants to nobility led slightly better lives to those who worked the crops as they were rewarded personally.
Crime and Punishment
Many of the crimes committed in the Middle Ages were due to poverty, which was caused by the nobility taking almost everything that they possessed. This shows that the nobility in the Middle Ages were stuck up hypocrites (I know it’s not relevant but it is true).
Some of the crime committed were: Rebellion/Treason, Heresy, Smuggling, Witchcraft and Highway Robbery.
The punishments that were inflicted are enough to make the most tolerant person gag.
