The mother and the three children are all dirty and wearing torn clothing. Their hair is disheveled and two children are leaning on her shoulder while she cradles a bay in her arm. It really shows how hard families had it during the depression. While this was taken at a migrant camp in Nipomo, California, the family did not actually live at this migrant camp. They were just waiting there while their car was being fixed.…

This piece out of the three I am writing about challenged my perspective the most because I had to find a way to attach the meaning of title of the work to the actual visual; I feel like the young life which is the girl and skulls represent the idea of death in this beautiful piece. I believe the influence for this piece is how the Mexican culture is rooted to the idea of death, but also embraces the beauty of life. I also viewed four different photos which have no specific artist, and were donated to the museum from the city of Guanajuato in Mexico. All four pictures displayed the Dia de los Muertos celebration that, like many cities in Mexico, takes place in the main square of town or the main plaza. The photos show alters that are made to show respect for friends, family, and neighbors.…

My favorite picture of Jessie Lopez De La Cruz is the second image on page 113. In the picture, Jessie is speaking to other farmworkers in the fields. I chose this picture because I feel that it captures the true essence of her activism. She grew up working those fields and continued to do so for many years, so it was in this setting that she was able to do the most good, by simply talking to the other workers about their struggles and encouraging them to join the union. Additionally, the image reveals that Jessie De La Cruz was an average woman who stayed true to her roots.…

The painting “Self-Portrait on the Border Between Mexico and the United States” by Frida Kahlo represents the sharp contrasts of two neighboring countries. The painting is about a growing industrial United States with the contrast of the falling of Mexico. She paints herself in a pink dress on top of a pedestal in between the countries. The impression on the painting is that the painter is unwelcoming with the new changes. She is Mexican; therefore, her heritage can be seen by the flag.…
