Wolf Hollow Summary

During the summer, the class was given an assignment to read a book called Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk. It is a book about standing up for others, and because that was our theme for the school year last year, it was an appropriate novel for us. On the whole, the book tells of how a girl named Betty Glengarry bullies a WWI veteran named Toby and the importance of telling the truth and standing up for those who can’t do it themselves. This story is told through the eyes of a twelve-year-old farm girl living in Pennsylvania at the time of the second World War, Annabelle McBride.

The story starts off with Annabelle telling of how Betty came to her school. At the beginning of the story, Annabelle does not know how to describe what sets her apart

Betty told her that, “‘He said he’d make me sorry if I touched you again’,” (Wolk 52). Toby was standing up for Annabelle in this situation, because she was being bullied by Betty and Toby told her to stop. Toby was an odd man to the whole community. He wandered around the hills by Annabelle’s house and lived in the smokehouse of a deceased man. One afternoon Annabelle was taking pictures with the camera that her family won, on one of the hills, and Toby was standing there watching her. She gave the camera to take a few pictures and that is how he ended up with the camera. He would take pictures and the McBrides’ would give him the film and the pictures. The day after quail incident, no one was prepared for the tragedy that was about to take place on the road by the school. At recess, Mr. Ansel, a German man, was riding to go to the market. Annabelle and her best friend Ruth went up to go say hello and pet the horses. Ruth was a little anxious to pet the horses, because, unlike Annabelle, the only animal Ruth had was a cat. Then, without warning, Ruth was on the ground, blood spilling out of her eye, stunned. When it finally sank in, she was screaming like her life depended on it. She was hit by a rock that came from the tree-covered hill above them. “The rock that caught Ruth square in the eye was …show more content…
Taylor asked if she could talk to Annabelle’s parents at the end of the day. They talked about what betty said and Mrs. taylor said that what Betty said couldn't be true because she locked it and it was still locked when she tried that morning. The constable, who was dealing with everything, had heard from Mrs. Taylor and put that into account. The next school day, betty did not come to school and it was pouring rain. Andy only came to ask where she was. Everybody thought that she must be sick. Later they found out that her grandparents saw her walk on the path to school. Betty was missing and when they went to ask Toby if he knew where she was, he wasn’t there. The people who already thought ill of him said that he probably kidnapped her. Annabelle and her parents thought differently. Especially, her Aunt Lily, that has been speaking ill of him ever since he came to town. Soon every man was out in the hills looking for Betty. At the end of the first day the constable came and told they he had questioned Andy about Betty. He said that the day before they were going to go to the smokehouse and cause trouble for Toby, although he didn’t want to go because it was raining and he didn’t think she

Betty went as far to say that an invisible being was biting and pinching her; another girl said this as well (Dunn 14; “The Haunting of the Salem Witch Trials”). Nobody knew why Betty was sick, some assumed it might have been food poisoning (Dunn 11). When three of Betty’s playmates, 11-year-old Ann Putnam, 17-year-old Mercy Lewis, and Betty’s cousin, 11-year-old Abigail Williams, became sick with the same symptoms, the town doctor was called…

This story begins at Janie’s grandmothers house, in the deep south, around the 1930’s. But the book begins in the middle of the road in third person, where worn out old Janie comes walking back into town, in overalls, and her hair a mess. The story begins at the end, and then starts from the beginning again. At first it sounds like any small town, gossip, women sitting on the porch talking harshly of others and then playing it fake when meeting that person. The gossip today is focused on Janie and how she ran away with a younger man, Tea Cake, and he stole all her money and left her to walk home with no shoes.…

The well-known naturalist and writer, Muir points out some specific details of the area of California in his book Twenty Hill Hollow. Here he examines how we write what we can and emit what we know by stating, “Presently you lose consciousness of your own separate existence: you blend with the landscape, and become part and parcel of nature”, giving us the purpose of writing and how it stimulates our understanding of nature that we somehow are part of it. (14) As a T-W, California authors individually and carefully observe nature and the landscape in which they live in, and usually write about what they view or feel. There is a sense of importance in informing our perspective and experiences, but our own experience is also unique.…

The school board has proposed that works of fiction should be removed from the curriculum of all English classes, that is a not a good choice because making a curriculum is very difficult and lengthy. The students would have to learn how to find themes and lessons in literature without actually putting it into use in the classroom. The board would then have to invest into new textbooks as the ones we have now have works of fiction in them and getting new books is costly. The piece of literature that I will be referring to in this writing the most is a book ‘’The Things They Carried’’ by Tim o’Brien. It is a fictional book that takes place in the Vietnam war and the narrator, which happens to be the author is part of a squad in the United states army called Alpha company.…

In “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” Irving uses vivid war-like imagery, tone, and plot to relay to the reader the battles faced by his characters in various aspects of life such as love, wealth, and power.…
