Wol In Year Of No Rain

In the book Year Of No Rain by Alice Mead, Stephen and Wol have different points of view on planing on their futures. On page 19 Stephen was very surprised on how Wol told him what he wanted to leave a family before he went to battle because he said he wanted to get engaged and have a family. On the other hand Stephen was very surprised and doesn’t think about his own future. They are different because one is thinking about his future family before he goes and could lose his life, and Stephen is thinking about now and what he doesn’t think about his family before he might be taken by the government soldiers.

In the middle chapters of Year Of No Rain by Alice Mead, Wol changes throughout the story on how he treats Stephen. On page 33, Wol

One way is that the book is based in 1998- 1999 in South Sudan around a small village (introduction page x). Alice is using this to base the story of the story, this is crucial to the story plot. Next, in Stephen’s village an older man made a hole in the fencing and two of his cows escaped in an attempt to get engaged to Stephen’s sister page 13. As this was unfolding Deng said,”I bet what he’s thinking is that if he lost some cows because of Stephen, then Stephens’s mother will have to accept his offer for Naomi” page 15. Lastly, Stephen, Wol, Deng, and Jario “ Their drinking water was now gone”. This is supporting history because it is very hot in South Sudan and also there was a drought in the period the book take place in. Alice Mead made a story around a boy named Stephen and his friends, there was a war going on in the area and soldiers were trying to take young boys for the war. The first major turning point was a supply drop by the UN and Naomi said,”Don’t be foolish, Stephen. Why don’t you think for once? Now that a food drop has come, soldiers will raid us” Alice Mead used this to kickstart the plot because once this happened it started to lead to other big events. Next, NPR said in an article titled As South Sudan Fights, Refugees Flow Into Uganda it stated that ,”in the northeast, where much of the civil war fighting occurred” also,”South Sudan’s civil war is supposed to be over. In April, after more than two years of conflict that killed tens of thousands of people”. Stating that there was arranged to be a peace treaty but one of the leaders baked out. Next, in Is There Any Hope For South Sudan? By the New York Times said,”South Sudan’s civil war is supposed to be over. In April, after more than two years of conflict that killed tens of thousands of people.” So there has been over two years of war in South Sudan. Next, in South Sudan: What is the fighting about the article states,”There have also been mass killings along ethnic lines, even though both Mr Kiir and Mr Machar have prominent supporters from the other's community”.
