Over 100 years ago W.K. Kellogg saw the potential of a single grain. Through his passion and dedication to find a healthier breakfast option, Kellogg’s Corn Flakes were created. Little did W.K. Kellogg know he was creating a multinational food industry.
In 1898, two brothers W.K. Kellogg and Dr. John Harvey Kellogg had a failed attempt in making granola by flaking wheat berry. They eventually got the idea to flake corn which started the infamous breakfast cereal, corn flakes. In 1906, the Kellogg brothers opened their first company the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company which brought to life the brother’s vision for healthier breakfast foods. Kellogg decided to expand its business into Canada in 1914. Eventually, they opened factories all over the world including Australia, England, Mexico, India, plus many more. Over the next

Kellogg announced, “I’ll invest in the people.” He split shifts and hired new employees while also funding the W.K. Kellogg Foundation whose mission was to “help children realize their potential” which is still Kellogg’s mission today. Kellogg showed his continuing commitment to people when he decided to proudly include the nutritional value on the boxes. In World War II, Kellogg’s proudly produced “K-rations” to the troops overseas. They developed Kellogg’s Raisin Bran to insure proper nutrition to Americans. In 1969, Kellogg’s had the opportunity in providing breakfast for the Apollo 11 crew as they traveled to the moon. The W.K. Kellogg Institute for Food and Nutrition Research was opened in 1997 whose main goal was to provide “great tasting and good for your family” foods. In 2006 Kellogg Company celebrated their 100 commitment to “nutrition, health, and quality.” The Special K Bars were also created this year for on the go nutrition.
