Veteran handlers and animal advocates alike say that these deaths were preventable and resulted because of negligence. Wix, a bomb-sniffing police dog from Brown County, became the first dog in Wisconsin to die from heatstroke in recent memory. When the heat alarm and air conditioning in the handler's squad car malfunctioned, Wix died as a result on August 12th. The officer parked the car in direct sunlight at a Championship golf tournament near Sheboygan. During an investigation, they determined that the handler had done nothing wrong, and because the car's air conditioning malfunctioned, it was not an act of direct negligence.
