In society today, mentally ill people are often subject to misunderstanding and abuse because of their difference. In response to this, many types of media, including film documentaries, have been created to try to explain and explore the lives of these people. One such film, Witness, a short biographical film directed by independent filmmaker Michael Buckley, investigates the themes of mental illness, documenting the key protagonist John Harrowell during his forced residence within a mental intuition. By using a wide range of filmic techniques, Buckley is able to create viewer sympathy and successfully engage his audience.

Symbolism and motifs are techniques that are used by directors to add depth and further meaning to their film. Buckley utilises symbolism throughout to convey the feelings and emotions that Harrowell experiences hroughout his story. Through silhouettes, techniques like symbolism and stylised action are able to be used in a variety of situations. An example of this is when Harrowell is told that his sister had died. During the conversation, the nurse is shown bigger than Harrowell, displaying that Harrowell is smaller and less powerful than the nurse. When he gets angry and starts to throw the furniture around, the scene impactfuls due to silhouettes. Without them, the scene would not have been as serious, perhaps even comical. Afterwards, people are seen rushing in to hold Harrowell down. The blank faces cause unease for the viewer as these people are faceless strangers forcefully holding Harrowell, the victim down amidst the panic. What follows is a larger nurse standing over Harrowell, small and lying on the floor, which further represents the power relationships within the

Deliverance is definitely a film that alternates between “Man vs Man” and “Man vs Nature”; the way the themes are explored makes the film a little unique. Many of the scenes depict “Man vs Man”, for instance Ed’s inability to shoot the arrow without his hands trembling, despite him being an “excellent shot” at inanimate objects, he can’t shoot any living being whether animal or human without his conscious, hence the hand trembles, fighting back. Even when experiencing and witnessing the humiliating, cruel, shameful crime committed against Bobby and his own near miss; he still couldn’t shoot the men responsible, nor could he fully make eye contact with Bobby afterwards. Another representation would be the change in character or personality…

The story marigold follows an experience that the narrator had as a child, that she describes as the moment she grow up (came of age). The main character in text also debates throughout the story weather she is a girl or a women. this plays significance because she talks about it with great symbolism that helps the reader identify with her and the environment she's in. An example of symbolism within the story is when the narrator is talking about how during the setting of the story nobody had an understanding of the world outside of there poor community, and how she felt trapped by this in which she remarked “ zoo-bred flamingos who knows that nature created him to fly” —marigold, paragraph 4.…

The Falsely Accused In July of 2016, Micah Johnson interrupted a “Black Lives Matter” protest to attack the police officers who were protecting the participants in the march. Out of malice, he murdered five officers whose intent was only to keep the people safe. Blind vengeance caused this killer to take matters into his own hands resulting in the death of five innocent men. The hysteria in the Salem witch trials is similar to the hysteria towards police officers now because they both are being blamed with no evidence, being blamed out of vengeance, and or being blamed from what society pushes.…

In the end, it is suggested that love is a realistic cure to heal mental illness. This challenges medical science where medication is the only effective treatment. However, this movie intelligently displays the intricacy of disorders and the effect traumatic events can have on people. The movies focus is the story line, leading to inaccuracies in the portrayal of mental disorders. However, it is by far the best representation of mental illness which is mostly displayed by media as gun toting, knife wielding serial…

The film The Believer, is a film about Danny Balint who is a Jewish boy that becomes a neo-Nazi. He grows up to be an angry, violent guy, attacking Judaism and Jews. Throughout the film, the paradoxical anti-Semitic view of Jewish self-hatred can be seen but along with this, viewers see that as much as Danny hates Jews and Judaism, he cares about the traditions as well. Although Danny kills himself, thus ending the protagonist, the ending of the film is inconclusive. One could argue that Danny chose to take his own life because of his internal struggle between being a neo-Nazi and a Jew.…

“Symbolism is the use of multiple symbols representing differentiated terms in a system which conveys meaning.” Na Li writes this in, the international journal of language studies. Writers enjoy using symbolism, which allows the reader to form personal opinions. The ideas are left for the reader to form, without having the writer place it on the page. Symbolism in novels can show you what’s really hiding in between the lines. In George Orwell’s “1984” and Allan Moores’ “V for Vendetta”, they both contain points of symbolism that are similar and different to each other. From V’s assortment of roses and Winston’s glass paperweight, these symbols have a major role in the story by affecting the characters, setting, and other elements. The symbols also affect the theme(s) which overall can change the book’s meaning. In Orwell's "1984," Winston sees posters everywhere that show a man with the words "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU."…

In the short film “falling sparrows” directed by Murray Keane, the director simultaneously uses techniques to portray the idea that younger people are vulnerable to mature situations to the audience(New Zealand teens). The techniques I think were most effective towards portraying this idea throughout the film are imagery, music, camera work and acting. the technique of imagery/ Symbolism is used to portray the idea of younger people are vulnerable to mature situations an example of this is when 5 sparrows are shown dead on the ground and one is shown as being shot this links to the movie title “falling sparrows” as well as foreseeing the youngest boy “blue dragon” Cedric’s death by a gun the symbol of 6 boys 6 bullets shown when Cedric is hiding from the English boys as they storm the nazi bunker. this is another example of symbolism used by the director to…
