On the evening of Saturday October 8th, the cast of the play Fuddy Meers took the stage and put on a unique and exquisite performance. The play took place in the Temple Theatre which I found was a highly interesting venue. There were several different elements that I found greatly intriguing during the course of the ninety minute performance, however, there were a few elements that I felt were also lacking. The first element that I believed helped to add significance to the performance was the stage setup(1). The revolving setup of the stage was perfect for this play and it allowed much versatility for the characters during specific instances.…
On October 28, 2017, I attended Desert Hot Springs High School’s theatrical performance, Love Sick, a play produced by John Cariani. Mr. Landmann is the head director of the theater department at DHSHS and was able to execute a great show with the help of his students: Matilde Alejandro, Megan Johnson, Bethany Navarro, Luis Salazar, Nathaniel Esparza, Natalia Martinez, Angel Limas, Esmeralda Hernandez, Esmeralda Salazar, Nicholas Jacob Gamboa, Baylee Bryant, Jonathan Calderon, Erika Aleman, Jesus Hernandez, Austin Aguirre, Edna Escobedo, Anjali Singh, Angel Ramirez, Elijah Cross, Michelle Lopez, Alondra Campos, Sadie Cunningham, Joseph Arisco, Maya Souza, Efrain Flores, Kimberly Solano, and Zauriah Cotton. Love/Sick is a play that contains lovers and dreamers that look into the agony and the happiness that comes with being in love and in relationships. To begin with, the plot of the play was very straightforward and unmissable. It outlined all the effects, good and bad, that comes with being in a relationship as well as depicting all the dilemmas.…
Stupid F- - -ing Bird is a very interactive and well performed play, which emphasizes on the daily struggles of artists, family and other human relationships. I saw the play on March 5th, 2016 at the Roy Bowen Theater, located on the campus of the Ohio State University. The production of this performance was made possible by the courtesy of the department of theater at the Ohio State University. The play was directed by Maureen Ryan and produced by Lesley Ferris. The play’s setting was of the 21st century.…
Introduction What makes a play worthy of being staged? What guarantees that an audience will want to see this production or connect with it? There’s a wide range of elements that go into a dramatic play that have been examined time and time again and interpreted in different ways. Aristotle and David Ball have both examined the structures of theatrical plays and what makes them substantial, however the two don’t agree on many topics. After reading a translation of Poetics by Aristotle and David Ball’s…
In the play “A Free man of Color” by John Guare, Jacques Cornet is an affluent black man living in Louisiana. When you hear a statement like that, most people wouldn't believe it to be true, but yes, Jacques Cornet was the centerpiece of his town and most popular person in Louisiana. He loved clothing, he loved women, he loved money, and so on. In this historical timeframe however, something threatens his freedom and Jacques struggles to save his last bit of dignity when he is faced with the raw and pure truths of the world.…
Suzzane Udoette Mrs. Robertson English 7-8 May 12 2017 Dramatic Techniques Dramatic techniques are used to help readers have a greater understanding of work; it is also used to convey idea and beliefs to the readers. Dramatic techniques are used by play writers to help readers appreciate a written work, for example dramatic irony, paradox, soliloquy, haramtic, this are some of the used to develop skills, creativity and enhance meaning and understanding of the story. These techniques can be seen in play such as The Broken Calabash, The Crucible and Othello, without dramatic devices plays would be boring and lifeless.…
I believe this production keeps the audience’s attentions because of the obscure topic and nature of the play. They then use this topic to present an underlying message. Although many messages could be perceived from this performance, I believe it is to show how people are trying to find themselves, and where they fit in. Elin Jean is used as a symbol to represent the message presented in the play. The whole play Elin Jean is fighting with her parents, but mainly her father, to let her swim in the ocean.…
1. Metatheatrical is a term that refers to a moment when a play talks about the conventions of doing theatre (this happened a lot in Passion Play). Indicate three moments of metatheatricality in Well. What effect did these moments have on you while you were reading? a.…
In Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors, Shakespeare poses a question at the start of the play which functions as a theme. Shakespeare them implements and embeds motifs within the play, which offer implicit answers, allowing the reader to develop their own understanding of the work as a whole. The question Shakespeare poses is- To what extent do the characters go to in order to satisfy their need to belong, or feelings of longing? This question is then satisfied by motifs of water and the sea, and forces of magic and sorcery.…
One conflict that I see in this play is individual vs. society, in the case of Kali. Kali is a lesbian and feels that this conflicts with her beliefs and would interfere with her relationship with the people in her family. I consider this a societal conflict, also, because of the way Kali asks Steve to quiet down when he mentions her being a lesbian and the way that she whispers the word. She is evidently bothered by how others would look at her as well. One key conflict in the play happens between Kali and Steve, when she admits that she is a lesbian and he asks her to marry him.…
In this musical it is safe to say that there are many types of tones throughout the show. For example, two types of tones we discussed in class were formal and informal. Although, many might suggest that these two types were the central part of this musical, I slightly disagree. To me and I’m sure many others, the students created this very playful environment while they were acting and singing.…
Elinor Fuchs is a university professor whose work has revolved around the analysis of theater and comprehension of the world inside a play. She released an article with the intention of helping her readers create a better analysis of whichever play in hand by creating a series of questions that removes the reader from looking inside the world of the play into the outside. Questions such as “What changes in this world?” (Fuchs, p.7) help place the reader from the first page to the last sentence in order to understand what happened from an outside perspective. On the other hand, she also makes her reader analyze with her question “what has this world demanded of me?”…
Briony wants to perform the play she wrote, but her relatives do not meet her expectations. Frustrated, she abandons her play. Briony’s need to execute the play exactly how she imagines it reflects her constant need to be in control. She cannot accept anything that she did not conceive herself. Having abandoned her play she begins a new project based on what she sees at the fountain between Robbie and Cecilia and her her interpretation of it.…
Intricate details on the scenery made the buildings feel authentic and inviting, grabbing my attention from the moment I walked in the theatre. The costuming was also fantastic, portraying the time period well and adding even more authenticity to the production. All of these individual aspects of a play production acted as an important role, but none of them caught my attention as much as the storyline. I was entwined in the story from the moment the stage lights came on, engulfing myself in the man-made atmosphere presented in front of me. The story went on to tell a tale of a greedy…
A play and a novel are two very different ways of telling a plot of a story. In the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry the audience is able to feel involved in the story through many aspects. Usually in novels it is consistent with one point of view through the story. However, in a play the audience is able to gain perspective from most of the characters. The stage directions in a play gives the reader an insight on the actions taken among a character.…
