One, this quote means that if you are struggling with something, then you are getting better at it. Two, this quote means that struggling is a good thing. Lastly, this quote tells us that if you are not struggling then you are not getting any better.

Fredrick Douglass’s motivational passage “Learning to Read” reinforces the fact that everything is possible. No matter weather you believe the statement to be true, this message states that no matter the condition, if you set one’s mind to it, it can be accomplished. For example, as a slave, reading and writing is not a privilege that everyday people, such as you and I, get to experience. During this time, slaves reading and writing was comparable to attempting to murder someone now days. This was a “crime” to learn, read, write or challenge the right at a formal education was punishable in some of the worst ways.…

As humans we go through great deal of thoughts and emotions that are cemented forever in our brains. No matter the change in our lives we will remember and we don’t forget the worst that we go through, but we use it as motivation and to change others. Douglass and many other slave’s stories are the remnants that legitimately tells us how slavery was and how they experienced the feeling that they did. Douglass’s argument in these paragraphs were that the cruelty and lengthy hours of work and never ending pain that comes with it, breaks down who you are as a person. Douglass lays out in the opening that the work was unbearable and at times the slaves would hope for it to rain, blow, hail, or snow, too hard for them to work in the field but they never stopped working.…

After reading the Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass, an American Slave, I learned a lot about the determination of man and the further horrors of slavery. Douglass was born as a slave and lived the first half of his life as one till he escaped. He didn’t have him mother growing up and he never knew who his father really was either. There was word it was his first owner and that he was a white man but that was the extent of Fredrick’s knowledge of the man. The moment he was old enough he’d be sold and witness horrors slavery forced upon him before being sent off to Boston to live with the Auld’s where he’d learn his ABC’s and soon enough start to teach himself how to read and write.…

Slavery, at its very core, is cowardly. As I am reading, I am trying to understand what gives certain people the mindset that someone is less human than they. Men that feel the need to overpower others based on the color of their skin is atrocious and weak. When humans bleed, as all the slaves are very well aware of this due to beatings, whippings, and gashes, they all bleed red. Humans all feel pain.…

However, rarely you do have some individuals who actually inspired by the people that have come before us. I am talking about hundreds of years before us, like Harriet Tubman, Malcolm X, Thomas Edison, and Abraham Lincoln.
